Stampede Tragedy at Former Sokoto Governor's Residence Claims Nine Lives

By -

At least nine individuals have tragically lost their lives, with numerous others sustaining severe injuries in a stampede at the residence of former Sokoto State Governor, Aliyu Wamakko. The heart-wrenching incident unfolded on Thursday night as residents clamored for palliatives being distributed at the Senator's residence in the Gawon Nama area of the state.

Among the deceased was a volunteer operative of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), adding to the sorrow of the situation. Those injured were promptly transported to hospitals for urgent medical attention, where they are currently receiving treatment and showing signs of improvement.

Senator Wamakko, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Sokoto North District at the Senate, has taken the responsibility of covering the medical expenses for the injured, extending a gesture of support during this distressing time.

In response to the incident, the spokesperson of the Sokoto Police Command, Ahmed Rufai, confirmed that an investigation has been initiated to unravel the circumstances leading to the stampede. However, he was unable to provide an exact figure regarding the casualty toll at the scene.

This tragic occurrence compounds the series of stampedes witnessed across the country in recent months. Just last month, three students of Nasarawa State University in Keffi lost their lives in a similar stampede during the distribution of rice donated by the state government. Additionally, several individuals perished in another stampede during the distribution of zakat (almsgiving exercise) to residents, underscoring the urgency for improved crowd control measures during such events.
